The first Adris RC44 Cup was held in Rovinj from 28 September to 2 October 2011, and the organisers, impressed by what they saw, increased the rank of Rovinj’s regatta. As a result, from 3 October to 7 October 2012 Rovinj hosted the Adris RC44 World Championship.
On this occasion the best sailors of the world came to Rovinj, including the Olympic gold medal winners, winners of the America's Cup, as well as the current world champion. The list of renowned sailors included Russell Coutts, Paul Cayard, Cameron Appleton, Ray Davis, Larry Ellison, James Spithill, Markus Wieser and Terry Hutchinson. The regatta features 15 teams from 11 countries. Except Rovinj, the competitions are held in California, Austria, Italy, France, Spain and the Canary Islands.
The RC44 class has the reputation of being the sailing Formula 1, as the attractive ships, which represent slightly smaller versions of the boats used in the America's Cup, are made using the same production technology as the Formula 1 cars. All teams sail on identical RC44 sailing boats designed by Russell Coutts, the four-time winner of the America's Cup. Each team participating in the regatta consists of a
boat owner, four amateurs and three professional sailors and tacticians. The sailboat owners, who are mostly businessmen and successful entrepreneurs, are at the helm during the race.
The speed, design and performance of RC44 sailing boats are spectacular, so the races quickly gained many fans in the world of sailing. The fact that the ships have great acceleration and can sail in all conditions guarantees an exciting and balanced contest, in which the skills of the crew and skippers are crucial.
Alongisde Ante Vlahović, M.Sc., Chairman of the Board of Adris grupa, and Marijan Hanžeković, President of Croatian Sailing Federation, who are the hosts of the competition, the event was attended by the most successful Croatian sailors, finalists of the 2012 Olympics, Ivan Kljaković Gašpić, Tonči Stipanović and Šime Fantela. The President of the Republic of Croatia, Professor Ivo Josipović, Ph.D., who was in Rovinj during both Adris RC44 competitions, expressed his support to his hosts' efforts to promote Croatia and Rovinj as first-rate nautical and sporting destinations in the world.
